PAINTING DESCRIPTION:
As told in Tongan cosmology: Tangaloa was working at his wood workshop in the sky. He let wood chips fall from the sky into the ocean, creating ‘Eua, the first island in the kingdom of Tonga. Trees bloomed on the island. Tangaloa felt the island needed to be populated. He sent one of his sons, in the form of a bird, down to ‘Eua. The bird pecked at the branch of a tree, breaking it off. The bird dug into the branch and dragged out the worms. From the worms, men evolved. Once fully formed, Tangaloa saw the need for the men to have wives. Tangaloa’s brother, Maui, journeyed to Pulotu (paradise/the spirit world/the afterworld), to bring the men wives.

And thus this is the story of how man and woman came to be.
